What is a Wiki?

WICK-ee or WEE-kee, Hawaiian for quick. It is a webpage that lets contributors easily add, remove or edit and change what is at the site.

A wiki can be password protected or open to any user.

It may be useful in the classroom in the following ways:
assess the level of student understanding
give parents insight into their child's learning
social networking
sharing technology projects with parents

Some sites to explore:
http://www.wikispaces.com/
http://www.seedwiki.com/
pbwiki.com
http://www.wetpaint.com/

After viewing the video and looking at the above sites how to you feel about wikis? Do you think it would be useful in the classroom? If so, do you see yourself using wikis? How?

I have heard of wiki but had no idea that you could do so much with it! There are so many ways you could use this tool in the classroom, especially for high school students and parents! I agree with some of the others, however, that wiki could encounter unauthorized editing. I could see myself using this as a way for students to add things they would like to do in class, listing interesting things they would like to know more about, party lists, etc. While I could see myself possibly using this tool, it's not something I would put a lot of time into. Very interesting though! :)

I've heard a lot about Wiki and so far all my instructors have said not to use it because it is easily changed by others so the information is not reliable.
I guess as long as the students understand that the information may not be correct and to double check the information it should be ok to use the sites.

I am a newcomer to the world of Wikis and blogs, so I am being cautious at this point. After exploring the sites and the tutorial, I have gained a more appreciative view of these tools. I plan to teach in the early elementary grades, and see a somewhat limited use for these tools in that setting. Also, my major concern is for the protection of identity for the students and their caregivers, and the open atmosphere of the wiki presents a stumbling block. I plan to continue to investigate the benefits of using this tool in my future classroom, and hope that through learning more about it, I may become more confortable with it's use in the classroom.

I have never heard of the wiki before, but it seems like a great way to bounce ideas of one another. I agree with Elly in that its reliablility is questionable. That aside i feel its a great tool for the modern classroom.

I would have never thought about making a blog for my class when I became a teacher. I think I would use the blog as a resource to the parents mainly and then add some educational games for the students to work with. I think the parents would use the blog as a tool to see what is going on in my classroom and what the students are learning.

I had never heard of wiki, so the video was very helpful. I think that there are many advantages to using wiki instead of email or notes home to parents. I could see myself using it in the classroom for field trips, classrom needs, or project materials. I haven't had the chance to use a wiki yet, but if I did, it'd probably be for an outing with friends or a family get-together.

I had never heard of wiki before this blog and the videos. Wow, there is so much you can do! The only downfall would be that maybe not all of the information is reliable and correct. However, if students go into this with an open mind and remembering that it may not all be real, I think wiki could be very usefull. A good way to get students to do extra research is to find information and research it themselves to make sure it is from a reliable source. I could see myself using wiki when I am in the classroom.

I haven't heard of wiki before. It sounds like something that could be very useful for teachers though. Although the information can be changed I think it can still be something interesting to try.

I think that wiki is interesting, but I belive that it also can be decieving. Since the information can be easily changed, it could mislead students on information. It is an interesting tool to let students edit information and put in their input into!

I think wiki would be great in the classroom! The only concern I have with wiki is that anyone can add or edit information to the website, which means some of the information could be incorrect. I do think that it would be fun for students to add things to the wiki website.

I am excited about the idea of using wikis in the classroom. It would be really beneficial for any grade or subject. The teacher could post information and the students could add to it. It would also be neat for students who are maybe working on projects to be able to post their ideas of facts and collaborate together. It is another great tool to replace emailing ideas or files.

I have never heard of wiki till now. I did not know that there was many things that you could do with wiki. I really like it. I would love to use this in the classroom. I believe it would be great especailly for students to leave comments to things we have done in the classroom. Although i do not like that people can come in and change things, i think that there should be away you could make your things private. Thats the only thing i do not like about wiki because you can not control what is being changed and put out there.

I have heard the term wiki before but never really cared to find out what it meant. I am excited that I have taken ELED 3300 and learned so much about technology and how to use it in my classroom. Now that I know what wikis are, I would definitely use them in my classroom. It would be a great way for students to collaborate and put together some sort of research or presentation. I would not allow my students to do research from wikipedia though. Since there could be some misleading information, I would only use wikis in the classroom for projects only.

I think Wikis are an excellent teaching/learning tool for the classroom. Not only can students communicate, but so can parents. I like the idea of allowing students to collaborate online, in a safe way. I used a wiki in another class this semester and found it to be a very affective learning tool.

I have heard of Wikis before. We have all been warned against using Wikipedia for class. This site is just a very large Wiki. I don't think I would use one in my classroom. The fact that the content can be change by anyone makes it an unacceptable risk for a teacher. Let's face it, kids will be kids, and they don't always have the best judgement. Instead I think a blog would better serve a teacher to use for students and parents.

A private label wiki used in school sounds to be a plausible idea to keep information in a contained environment. I like how the private label wiki puts the teacher as the administrative controller, who can remove certain discussion threads that are not appropriate for the wiki’s discussion. I do not think a wiki would be a good idea to use to assess a students understanding. The reason is anyone in the class can change a person’s previous message either to make them look dumb or to help them appear smarter. Enemies of the student would do the first option while friends would do the last option. I believe if a teacher wants to assess a student’s understanding over a specific subject that they should use a blog. A blog would identify the person making the comment and no one out of the class could change a student’s comment. I do not feel that wikis would be useful in the classroom. I do not see myself using a wiki in my classroom instead I see myself using a blog. I feel blogs are similar enough to wikis that it will be a good substitution, but that it has some differences that make it better than wikis.

I learned about wiki for the first time in this class, and I found them to be very useful. I think it can be a good tool for teachers and learners to use. It is a good way to use communication and it is a good way to get useful ideas. I think that in the long run wiki will be a good tool for teachers to use!

I have heard of Wiki as well, and much like Elly, all of my instructors said its not a creditable reference.

I have heard of Wiki but have not had any experience with it. After learning about it, I feel like it could be a great learning tool. However, educators must be extremely careful when using them to make sure the content is appropriat and that the information is legitimate and credible.

I like the info about the wikis. I had no idea what they were or what I would ever use one for until I took this class.

I like the idea of password protected wikis. These days it is hard to get parents involved with their childs education and I believe this is a good way to allow parents to see what we are doing in the classroom. By protecting the wiki with passwords we can insure the wiki is only exposed to those we intended it to be.

Hello Dr. A!
Wiki may be used as a tool for open learning, however we need to be able to regulate how it opens the minds. Being open-minded is a very positive thing, and it teaches more than just basic facts. It helps students think for themselves, and make good judgement because they should know that everything they hear is not true. Moreso, perhaps we can use wikis to test hypothesis by taking facts the students reads on them and researching them with reliable data. Therefore, this can be a science experiment and an english assignment to edit the information they find incorrect. Wikis are a good idea after all!
Thanks,
Shelby

I think that after viewing the links and video on Wiki's that creating my own Wiki could be useful to not only myself as a teacher, but lots of other professionals. You could use this to keeps parents updated on student assignments and classroom activities. You could also use it as a reference to inform people about yourself so that they are more comfortable with their child in your classroom and meeting with you.
